Industrial production of laccase Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Industrial production of laccase - Essay Example This enzyme is mostly seen in higher plants and fungi. In plants, laccases can be seen in trees, turnips, cabbage, asparagus, beets, apples, pears, potatoes and other vegetables. It is also detected in other plant species like mango, mung bean, prune, syncamore, peach, pine and lacquer. It is also evident among insects likeCalliphora,Diploptera,Drosophelia, Sarchophaga,Rhodnius and Papilio. However, wood rotting fungi are the most common producers of Laccase. Even though laccase is present in plants, insects and fungi itââ¬â¢s activity is limited in bacteria like Marinomonas meditteranea, Azospirillium lipoferum. Laccase is an enzyme with less saccharide compounds in bacteria and fungi compared to plants. The studied that conducted are on extracellular proteins although intracellular proteins are found in several insects and fungi. The purified form of laccase exhibits a blue appearance. The production of laccase from fungi is practiced for industrial use. As per Mayer( 2002, pg 55 1-65)ââ¬Å"Laccases are involved in fungal virulence and possibly in lignification in higher plantsâ⬠History and Development The laccase enzyme was discovered in Japanese tree Rhus Vernicifera more than one century ago. For many years it was believed that only the ligninolytic system of some white rot fungi could aid in production of lacasse. However, it was Bourbonnais andPaice who found that laccase can catalyze the oxidation of non ââ¬â phenolic benzylalchohols with the aid of redox mediator. This led to the discovery that laccase mediator system can degrade effectively residual lignin. Because of its extensive reaction capabilities and broad usage in biotechnology it was further studied. In most fungi, lacasse is produced at low level which is not enough for commercial purpose.Lacasse are promising enzymes which has a conventional usage in industries like textile, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals and nanobiotechnology. Lacasse is generally produced by fungi grown on ba sal media at low concentration. As per Gedikli(2010,pg.9 -16) ââ¬Å"Lacasse activity depends on the type of fungal strain used, growth conditions employed, the presence and the absence of inducers, incubation time, nature and composition of culture medium and genetic manipulationâ⬠.In order to obtain higher concentration various supplements need to be added like metal ions. White rot fungi is known to have diverse response to inducers in lacasse activity. If inducers are added it can enhance the concentration of lacasse. The lacasse production is highly depended on the cultivation conditions of the fungi strains. The lacasse is primarily produced in industries by submerged cultivation method. However, the excessive growth of mycelium is one of the disadvantages of this method as it hampers the production yield due to mass transfer and metabolic limitation. But this situation can be controlled by the immobilization of cells. Solid state fermentation is also a method to produce l accase. The laccase enzyme is extracellular and secreted in to a medium through filamentous fungi. The secondary metabolism of different fungi generally produces lacasse. The lacasse production is influenced by different factors like type of cultivation, concentration of

Memo of Analysing Apple Inc Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Memo of Analysing Apple Inc - Research Paper Example The 2013 financial year shows a general fall in the revenues and profit of the company. In 2011, the firm had a revenue of 108.249. The figure implies that revenues grew by 44% to reach a value of $156.508 in 2012. Consequently, net income increased by 60% and rose from $25.922 in 2011 to $41.733 in 2013. The figures above show that Appleââ¬â¢s revenue is growing at a decreasing rate. The situation is supposedly caused by factors such as increasing expenses, ethics and corporate social responsibility and competition from other major brands. Apple will try to minimize the proportion of income arising from operations. As seen in the 2012 and 2013 financial years, costs substantially reduced the income applicable to shares. Reduction of expenses will be done through more outsourcing of business in areas where the costs of operations are lower. In addition to that, the company will set new standards or business terms to its suppliers to increase the quality of products and avoid delays. As Saxena and Sangeeta put it, effective outsourcing and sub-contracting is sure ways of reducing costs for the firm (154). The reputation of the corporation in terms of ethics and CSR is not sound (Warther and Chandler 95). Apple will thus seek to address the concerns by participating in welfare programs in communities where it operates. The CSR action will be based on environmental issues, employment, sports and health. The ethical perspective will focus on fair remuneration of employees, especially in supplier firms. Moreover, Apple will track and eliminate bribery that has ravaged the company and its supplier with the interest of enhancing the corporate image of the company. Apple faces stiff competition from major technology giants such as Samsung, Sony, Huawei and LG. The competition is intense and eats into the market share of brands such as iPhones. As a result, Apple will invest in research and development to ensure its products remain unique and differentiated from

Company analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Company analysis - Essay Example For instance, McDonalds engages in a serious training program for its managers. The training program is referred to as Hamburger University where professionalism is the base of its success. The McDonalds plan to win encompasses a framework for its global business. Through its strategic focus of the elements of people, product, place, price and promotion, the company has been able to capture the largest number of customers in the fast food industry. This has been in line with combination of financial discipline that has made it possible for the organisation to develop and maintain competitive advantage. For there to be success in any business, Yuece (5) argued that there is a need to have innovative ideas that enable a company to develop the existing products and services including introducing new products for the customers. This goes in line with the continued market research especially on customersââ¬â¢ needs and preferences. With this in mind, McDonalds has been able to able to design online services where customers are able to order online. This creates efficiency and reduction of time wastage. However, the company has been experiencing bad image in relation to unhealthy food habits encouraged by the consumption of fast foods that have been linked to obesity and other bad eating habit complications. This has led to the company being involved in several lawsuits and other legal cases. For instance, many cases have been brought forth in relation to trade mark issue. In addition, due to increased competition, McDonalds has faced stiff competition from its competitors. This has been attributed to what McKean (4) termed as rationality of consumers. This is the situation where customers become rational in consumption depending with the variety of choices that go in line with their needs and preferences. Therefore, if McDonaldââ¬â¢s competitors offer what some customers think best suits them, there are high chances that

Impact of Computer Technology
Impact of Computer Technology Computer Technology I am using and how Im using it? Computer technology starts from the time you wake in the morning, your alarm on your phone to the cup of coffee brewing. Computer technology has come a long way from when I was a child. Lots of us now have house alarms, electric toothbrushes, plasma televisions, Xboxes, I pad, tablets, laptops all these to interact with loved ones across the globe. These devices also encourage our children to interact on line with a wide variety of people in various occupations example the international space station through Facebook. Or Skype family and friends in Australia or New Zealand. Another feature I find good is the various apps on Facebook that allows you to check in during disasters to allow family and friends to know your safe. Other devices are used to check on our health blood pressure monitors is one I have checked every 6 months along with the nebuliser used when I suffer an asthma attack. Advantage of computer technology? Computer technology has changed the way we live considerably, our life expectancy has increased. This is down to all the new medical devices available and procedures people can have to prolong lives. Every day we hear of newer devices coming on the market whether it be for the weather devices, food industry or weapons, medical devices, aircraft, drones or I robot technology. Some are extremely helpful helping toward our survival on this planet. Weather devices help track hail, rain, snow, frost, heatwaves. Society has a better understanding of different cultures all at the touch of a button thanks to the companies that are committed to researching and updating Google being one of many.Ã Medical devices have improved over the years with cat scans, x ray machines including portal ones, from the largest to the smallest something as tiny as a wireless device. With the wide variety of technologies some are quiet complex but provide much needed support both in hospital setting to home s upport. Assistive technologies include mobility wheelchairs and aides, sensory hearing aids. Common aids being manufactured over the last number of years include bionic arms, legs and hands. As a lot of these are used in war torn areas. Home care has seen an increase of features to improve daily living for family members IV equipment, ventilators, hoists and specialised beds are commonly used in homes are care facilities. Freeing up hospital beds. There is a lot more medical technology out there this report names just some of them. Disadvantages of Computer Technology? Cyber Bullying is a major issue. Social skills are affected as people forget how to talk to one another. Social aspect of meeting new people has totally changed as has dating and clubbing. Letter writing has become a thing of the past. People have become addicted to online gambling and games. Public life impacts? Medical ID bracelets, medical apps on your mobile phones come in handy if you have a medical condition. This sort of devices can help save your life or those around you. New hips, knee replacements. Medical devices help improve lives of everyone. X-Ray, Vein visualisation technology, joint replacement, morphine pumps, incubators, cat scans many more. Entertainment television, news, educational documentaries, YouTube covers music, live feeds, life. Food industry improvements on farmers tractors, combis, growing technics. Digital diagnostics makes health care more accessible. Cloud is used in under developed countries for information. Wearables- Fitness trackers, smart watches another example is Intel teamed up with the Michael j. fox foundation to see if their wearable technology could pin point certain Parkinson disease. (Irish Computer science 2017) Health Formatics electron files, information stored in hospital data. Digital therapy Well frame combines mobile technology and AI (artificial intelligence) provides care for when clients return home. This technology tracks diet, exercise and its a GPS system. Catering to mental health clients, cardiovascular. Hackathons lots of the medical devices wouldnt be readily available if it wasnt for hackathons. Many of these devices were requested for other projects. Software developed, hardware inventions all came about through Hackathons. Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 Sets out provisions within the safety health and welfare act 2005 as set in legislation that the employer must. Carry carry out a risk assessment. Provide a safety standard for all equipment, chemicals within the premises. Must provide provisions for training for these equipment, chemicals and induction as part of an ongoing programme. Must inform all people staff, visitors, workmen anyone who enters the premises of the safety statement. Data protection legislation 2003. Data protection is your right to privacy. We also have the right to access data and have it corrected if its not correct or misinformed. Our data is protected once we give our details to certain companies under the data act 2003. Freedom of information act 2003. The freedom of information act 2003 allows us to access records held by the government departments and some public bodies. This is ensuring that charities must provide public records of all donations and how the money is spent. Defamation act 2009? This was changed from libel and slander to defamation to keep up with technology example Facebook and the easy access people have with sharing stuff. So, if I posted on Facebook that one of my neighbours was selling drugs and she wasnt but I didnt name her. But I had given out enough details for people to know who I meant thats defamation. Example neighbour wears black everything thinks shes a vampire with the gothic look. Well then, her employer the bank manager go AIB were to hear of this he suspended her until further notice.

The Infection of Rabies :: Disease Virus
Rabies: The Infection Rabies is an infectious disease that is hard to survive through. Although rabies is mostly found in animals, humans can also carry the virus and spread it amongst others. This virus is well known as the slow virus because it will slowly kill you. There are many symptoms of rabies, in both animals and humans, that reveal themselves only after they have been bitten. This part of the essay will give you the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the rabies infection. The infectious disease known as rabies is a virus that spreads from the wound to the central nervous system, causing the body to malfunction until finally crashing down. This virus is a transmittable disease that that runs in both humans and animals. In order for the virus to be transmitted, the saliva from the rabid animal needs to enter the open wound. There are many symptoms that prove that the bitten victim has rabies, one of them being death. This virus is really tricky because not only will you get the virus but you wonââ¬â¢t really know if you have rabies until the symptoms reveal themselves. At the time of the bite, saliva may enter the wound. The only way for the virus to be transmitted is if the saliva is in or close to the nerve tissue. From the nerve tissue, it travels until reaching the central nervous which then spreads to the spinal cord and brain. The virus incubates in the victim for approximately 1 to 3 months. The victim has no symptoms at this time. When it reaches the brain, the virus multiplies rapidly, passes to the salivary glands, and the victim begins to show symptoms. The infected victim usually dies within 7 days of being sick (ââ¬Å"Transmissionâ⬠2). We all hear stories about a rabid dog biting a human but we have to consider that not all rabies infections are transmitted by bites; the virus can also be transmitted by non-bites. The non-bites can be scratches, abrasions, open wounds, or mucus membranes contaminated with saliva or other potentially, infections material such as brain tissue from the rabid animal (Coye10). Mammals are the only species that can transmit rabies to one another. Although humans are mammals, they canââ¬â¢t transmit the disease the same way that animals transmit it. One way, which is the only recorded evidence where a human transmitted the virus to other humans, is by organ transplant (ââ¬Å"Investigationâ⬠2). Jay Gatsby and the Decline of the American Dream
Jay Gatsby and the Decline of the American Dream Free Online Research Papers Jay Gatsby and the Decline of the American Dream English Essay The American dream is viewed as the success one attains through hard work and perseverance. The traditional view of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is that any person, regardless of social rank, has the opportunity and ability to be all that they are meant to be. In stark contrast, Jay Gatsbys idea of attaining the American dream in the early twentieth century is through illegal money that was not acquired by hard work. This traditional idea does not support materialistic wealth as the only indicator of success; whereas Gatsbys only key to success is through his materialistic wealth. Gatsby accepts a free ride to the top of society instead of striving to reach his full potential through hard, honest work. What he reaches may seem like the real American dream to outsiders, but in reality he is just as miserable as before he acquired his fortune. Gatsbys dream is ââ¬Å"doomedâ⬠because he ââ¬Å"tries to buy his way into a society that will never accept him.â⬠(Taylor 1) He, like Nick, is ââ¬Å"trying to accomplish the great American project of remaking himselfâ⬠(Truby 1). The catch is that Nick understands that one cannot remake oneself using only petty items with no hard work. His house and all the outrageous things in it are prime examples of how badly he desires to fulfill his own personal dream, and how skewed his way of achieving it is. One main point in this corruption of the American dream is how Gatsby actually made his money. ââ¬Å"Gatsby gets his fortune through the illegal sale of alcohol, or bootleggingâ⬠during the prohibition era of the 1920ââ¬Ës (study world 1). When he finds out that Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s efforts to become a part of the rich society become stronger. He disregards his morals to become whatever he thinks she wants in a man. Since he c ouldnââ¬â¢t marry her when he was a poor boy, he believes that he can marry her as a rich man. He buys objects of great monetary value, hoping to give the impression of being totally content. However, Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay (Fitzgerald 83), and throws gaudy and elaborate parties in hopes that she will show up one night. He thinks that by fitting in with the society Daisy is in, he will win her heart back for good. The only problem is that he really doesnââ¬â¢t belong, and the so-called American dream of his is nothing but loads of money covering up his loneliness. Gatsby thinks that he can make an impact on Daisy by merely ââ¬Å"the possessions he ownsâ⬠(Taylor 1), such as his vast assortment of shirts. When Daisy sees the shirts, she reacts by replying, It makes me sad because Ive never seen suchsuch beautiful shirts before. (Fitzgerald 98) Gatsby indeed impresses her with these shirts, but does not realize that he cannot merely show off his pretty things and expect her to fall right into his arms. Another pride of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s and, ironically, what turns out to be the death of him is his new car. He buys a new, flashy yellow Rolls Royce, only of course to show off his wealth and impress Daisy. Gatsbyââ¬â¢s car is the recipient of many ââ¬Ëoohsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëahhs,ââ¬â¢ and from a distance Gatsby appears to be happy, especially when riding with Daisy Buchanan. His car alone, however, does not save him from a most tragic death. Daisy, the object of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s every desire, kills someone in this ornamental Roll s Royce, and Gatsby is eventually killed for it. The lack of real value and moral in Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream trickles down to even the guests at his weekend parties. Of course, they know who the infamous Jay Gatsby is. But a very small percent of the hundreds of guests Gatsby has every single weekend have ever spoken to the host of the party. These drones of guests sweep in and out of the parties week after week without really being invited, much less personally wanted there. Gatsby has house guests but still no real friends until Nick comes along, whom he uses only to get closer to Daisy. When Daisy finally reveals her affair to Tom, Gatsby urges her to tell Tom that she never loved him. He insists that she say it, but Daisy cannot bring herself to say that she didnââ¬â¢t ever love him, because ââ¬Å"I loved him once but I loved you too.â⬠(Fitzgerald 132) When she says this, it makes Gatsby realize that he will never have his picture-perfect version of the American dream, where Daisyââ¬â¢s thoughts have always been about him. Gatsby is demanding that Daisy declare her love for only him instead of doing things the proper way and waiting for her to willingly come to him. He would not wait for her, and work for her love; instead, he sacrificed values for selfishness. After Gatsby dies protecting the woman who will never really be his, his dream is still being decimated. The only people at Gatsbyââ¬â¢s funeral were Nick and his Father. The hundreds of people who took the time to utilize his house during weekend parties didnââ¬â¢t show up to the manââ¬â¢s funeral. Daisy, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s only reason for doing anything, didnââ¬â¢t show up to his funeral. His other almost-friends, Meyer Wolfsheim and Jordan Baker, didnââ¬â¢t show up to his funeral. This last step in his life makes his failure in life truly shine through. Though from the outside he had everything anyone could ever want, strangers couldnââ¬â¢t see that everything in his life was superficial, down to his friends. Free Essays on Spiritual World Of Tea
The Spiritual World of Tea In the Japanese tea ceremony there are many things that are used to represent the Japanese beliefs. In tea ceremony, water represents yin and fire in the hearth, yang. The water is held in a jar called the mizusashi. This stoneware jar contains fresh water symbolizing purity, and is touched only by the host. Matcha (green tea) is kept in a small ceramic container called a chaire, which is in turn covered in a shifuku (fine silk pouch), which is set in front of the mizusashi. The occasion will dictate the type of tana (stand) used to display the chosen utensils The host enters with the chawan (tea bowl) which holds the chasen (tea whisk), chakin (the tea cloth) which is a bleached white linen cloth used to dry the bowl, and the chashaku (tea scoop), a slender bamboo scoop used to dispense the matcha, which rests across it. These are arranged next to the water jar, which represents the sun (symbolic of yang); the bowl is the moon (yin). Retiring to the preparation room, the host returns with the kensui (waste water bowl), the hishaku (bamboo water ladle) and futaoki (a green bamboo rest for the kettle lid). As the host enters they close the door to the preparation room. Using a fukusa (fine silk cloth), which represents the spirit of the host, the host purifies the tea container and scoop. Deep significance is found in the host's careful inspection, the folding and handling of the fukusa, for their level of concentration and state of meditation are being intensified. Hot water is ladled into the tea bowl, the whisk is rinsed, and the tea bowl is emptied and wiped with the chakin. Lifting the tea scoop and tea container, the host places three scoops of tea per guest into the tea bowl. Hot water is ladled from the kettle into the tea bowl in a quantity sufficient to create a thin paste with the whisk. Current U.S Policy towards Libya Research Paper
Current U.S Policy towards Libya - Research Paper Example I am prompted to write your good office to recommend that our government should take a direct participation in Libya because I am concerned with the recent political development in Libya particularly the unclear circumstances that led to the death of the dictator Muammar Ghaddafi and NTCââ¬â¢s handling of its political prisoners that has been reported as being abused (CBS News, November 29, 2011). I believe that if the US government will take a proactive role in Libya, it will prevent the dissolution of its political gains that was earned by the revolution against the tyranny of Muammarââ¬â¢s government. I believe that it is only with US government direct participation that will ensure that Libya will follow the democratic process of justice and ensure its smooth transition into a real democracy. III. Argument why the official should act as you suggest. This should also have several parts:à - a) sketch the public problem, as you see it;à The newly founded government of Li bya is still very young and still carries the vestiges of the old regime. Being such, it is prone to excess with a predilection towards summary execution as a way of meting justice. This was clearly demonstrated with the unclear circumstances of Muammar Ghaddafiââ¬â¢s death where he was captured alive and was later reported dead alleging that he was caught in the cross fire (El Gamal). Many of us are not convinced. Given the political culture of Libya, we both know that there was a big probability that he was executed. Such, the US government must act so that similar acts or incidents would not happen again. As what we have seen, Libyaââ¬â¢s newly installed government is lukewarm in investigating the circumstances of his death if indeed he was caught in the cross fire or summarily executed. It would be better to take a preventive step than to react to an incident that has already happened. The recent development of prisoner abuse is already beginning to surface. With the less open political environment of Libya, I suspect that there are more abuses than what is actually reported. Already, UN had reported that Libyaââ¬â¢s new leaders acknowledged that prisoners are being abused (Associated Press November 29, 2011). If these abuses will continue, I am anxious that Libya will lose its political gains if it will degenerate and slide back to its former dictatorial nature of carrying out justice. In effect, nothing changed but only those who are in power. To keep Libyaââ¬â¢s political gains, it has to maintain a steady course towards democracy and proper implementation of justice. For Libya to achieve this, it is imperative that the United States government should be directly involved in setting up the justice system of Libya and its government. b) describe the inadequacy of the actions taken on it to date The United States government must learn from history, particularly the lessons taught by the experience of Iraq when the US government left after it l iberated the country from Saddam Hussein. Iraq disintegrated and fell into chaos without a clear government (Rashidian). We should not let this happen to Libya. Libya have started a revolution and able to win it under the slogan of freedom and democracy. But we have to understand that this was a close country that only had a bare idea of what democratic process and justice
